North Korean media reports that South Korean President Yoon Eun-hye has been impeached

SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korea’s parliament on Saturday passed a vote to impeach President Yun Seok-yeol, North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency reported on Monday.

Yoon was impeached in a second vote in South Korea’s opposition-led parliament over his brief imposition of martial law, shocking the country.

On December 11, the Korean Central News Agency reported for the first time the martial law crisis in South Korea triggered on December 3.

KCNA had little comment on Monday but called Yoon’s defiant televised speech on Dec. 12 a “press statement full of lies and bigotry” and pointed to a rally in front of South Korea’s parliament calling for Yoon’s impeachment.

It also noted media reports of the suspension of multiple South Korean military and police officials and the ongoing investigation into Yoon.

After the impeachment vote on Saturday, South Korea’s acting Defense Minister Kim Sun-ho called on the military to maintain a state of readiness and ordered commanders to work quickly, under the command of the stabilization force.

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had begun its first attack using large numbers of North Korean troops against Ukrainian forces fighting for an enclave in Russia’s Kursk region.
