The Woods family broke a long drought at the PNC Championship on Sunday, but golf’s most famous family is still looking for a place in the winner’s circle.
On the par-3 hole at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Charlie Woods hit a 7-iron from 176 yards that jumped and rolled straight into the hole for an ace.
The golf world went crazy when a young Woods, in his third year on the PGA Tour, accomplished something that his 15-time major champion father, Tiger Woods, had never accomplished in 26 years of competition. This was Charlie’s first hole-in-one in his entire golf career. Four years ago in 2020, he scored his first career eagle at the same tournament.
Woods has since moved on. After shooting 59 on Saturday, the first-round joint leader went on to make birdies. They shot 57 on Sunday and posted a 36-hole record of 28 under, but ultimately it wasn’t enough. Bernhard and Jason Langer also finished with the same score, and Bernhard was the last putter on the first hole of the playoffs, having just made an eagle putt. pole, defeating Team Woods to win his second consecutive PNC Championship.
Charlie’s hole-in-one and Langer’s win were part of a wild final round at the PGA Tour Champions that NBC’s Dan Hicks called “the greatest day in PNC Championship history.” Shortly after Charlie’s ace, Paddy Harington, the son of three-time major champion Padraig Harrington, also hit an ace on the 8th hole. These two aces are only the second and third place in the 27th event.
Langer, Woods’ playing partner and defending champion, took the lead three times on Sunday but was never able to wrest the commanding lead away from Woods. The two kept matching each other, birdieing the same hole nine times and responding to Charlie’s hole-in-one with an eagle on the par-5 4th.
Both teams parred the 17th hole and had a birdie on the 18th hole after Langer missed an eagle putt off the green.

That brought them back to the 18th hole, where Charlie Woods and Bernhard Langer were hitting the ball in almost the same position. Tiger Woods hit it on the right side of the green, while Jason Langer hit it 20 feet left of the hole in the center of the green, thanks to his father, Bob Bernhard’s hit was 50 yards farther than Charlie, and his hit was 20 yards closer.
Langer has now won a record six PNC Championships, Jason has now won four and his brother Stefan, who caddies for Jason, has won two.
This is Tiger Woods’ first tournament since losing at the Royal Troon Open. He skipped the Hero World Challenge, his charity exhibition event in the Bahamas, two weeks ago, saying his game wasn’t sharp enough and revealing he underwent his sixth back surgery in September.
But it’s worth noting that Tiger Woods decided to walk without the aid of a golf cart for the first time in his second appearance at the event, less than a year after his February 2021 crash. Since the event is hosted by the PGA Tour Champions, golf carts are available for participants.
The win was also a family affair for Woods, as Tiger Woods’ 17-year-old daughter Sam Woods caddied for him for the second year in a row. Woods’ ex-wife Elin Nordegren also appeared at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club to watch the game.
