Helicopter makes emergency landing at Camp Pendleton after catching fire
An engine fire on a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter caught fire mid-flight Friday afternoon, causing the aircraft to make an emergency landing at Camp Pendleton, authorities said.
A Marine Corps spokesman said all four crew members exited the helicopter safely and no one was injured.
The fire broke out at 3:11 p.m. on a CH-53E Super Stallion of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, the spokesman said. The crew made an emergency landing at Camp Pendleton, a Marine Corps base near Interstate 5 in San Diego County, and emergency crews were extinguishing the fire.
In a post Friday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol warned people of possible delays on Interstate 5 north of the Aliso Creek rest area. The post included images and videos showing the helicopter burning in a field, emitting dark black smoke.
