Virginia hunter falls to death after shooting bear in tree: authorities

A Virginia man was killed by a bear that his hunting partner shot out of a tree, according to Virginia wildlife officials.

The incident occurred in Lunenburg County, Virginia, on December 9, according to a statement from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.

A hunting party was tracking the bear when it ran up a tree.

As the group began to retreat from the tree, one of the hunters shot the bear, which fell onto another hunter about 10 feet from the base of the tree.

One person from the team administered first aid before Harvey was taken to two different hospitals.

But the wildlife department said the victim, Lester C. Harvey, 58, of Phoenix, Virginia, died of his injuries on Friday.

Harvey’s obituary said he left behind a wife, five children and eight grandchildren. He was a self-employed contractor and an avid outdoorsman.

There have been other similar incidents in the United States in recent years

In 2018, a man’s hunting partner in Alaska shot a bear on a ridge, causing the bear to fall down the slope onto the man. The man was also hit by rocks thrown by the bear and was seriously injured.

The next year, another man in North Carolina was injured after his hunting partner shot a bear in a tree. The animal fell from the tree and began biting the victim. The man and the bear then fell off the cliff.

The victim in North Carolina was taken to a hospital for his injuries and the bear was later found dead.
