Tyler Perry Studios president Steve Mensch dies in plane crash at 62

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend Steve Mensch,” a spokesperson for Tyler Perry Studios told NBC News in a statement. “For more than eight years, Steve was a key part of our team. A cherished member and well-loved by the Atlanta community.”
The message continued: “It’s hard to imagine not seeing his smile throughout the hall. We will miss him terribly. Our hearts go out to his family and we all pray for them.
Mensch, who is survived by his wife and three children, was piloting a single-seat plane that crashed on a road in Homosassa, Florida, on Friday night.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed Mensch was the only passenger on the single-engine plane, according to NBC News. Law enforcement initially closed the highway.
“Citrus County Sheriff’s Office deputies are on scene of a small engine aircraft crash near the intersection of Highway 19 and Longfellow Street in Homosassa,” a Facebook post read. “Currently, traffic in the area is The southbound lanes are closed and traffic is being diverted. Please avoid the area and take an alternative route if possible – expect delays.
Lanes reopened at 2:20 a.m. ET on Saturday, December 7.
Mensch joined Tyler Perry Studios in 2016, shortly after the company converted Atlanta-area military bases into film locations. It is now one of the largest studios in Hollywood.
“We’re doing something at Tyler Perry Studios that hasn’t been done in a hundred years. We’re building a massive movie studio,” Mensch previously explained in a 2019 interview with Paramount. “I feel like a legend.”
Perry, 55, added at the time that he had “no idea how serious this was going to get.”
“I can fill this space with all the dreams and ideas I have in my head,” Perry said.
Tyler Perry Studios previously occupied 30 acres, but quickly outgrew it.
“I hitched a ride here and I immediately saw the vision and what it could be,” he told today During a visit to 12 studio spaces in January 2020. “My imagination is crazy, man. When I start writing a show, I really focus.
Perry has not spoken publicly about Mensch’s death.
