Meta’s Quest Headset Bricking Issue: Updated Support Note Signals Progress
Meta has updated the top of its Quest support site to report a “software update issue” that is bricking Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S headsets. The company acknowledges that most users can now use their headsets normally, but is actively working on resolving the issue for all users.
This development may bring relief to Quest 2 and 3 owners who have reported being told by Meta that their headsets were no longer under warranty and thus not eligible for repair or replacement. Several Reddit users claim to have received confirmation emails indicating that their out-of-warranty service requests for the issue were being processed, suggesting that the company is taking steps to address the problem.
A Meta support forum community manager also revealed that customer support had received new directions on how to assist users affected by the issue. This indicates that the company is working to provide solutions for those who were initially told that their headsets were beyond repair.
The issue was first noted on December 6th by Meta on its support site, where it mentioned software update problems affecting “some new Quest 3S devices.” However, the initial report did not mention Quest 2 or 3 headsets or specify the affected software version. A more recent update on the support site focuses on the bricking issue affecting multiple headset models and acknowledges Meta’s efforts to find a solution.
The mention of a “software update issue” is directly attributed to the rollout of the latest Meta Quest update, v71, which introduced enhancements such as a revamped virtual desktop display connection and keyboard passthrough support in virtual environments. The update was announced on December 9th.
