Coast Guard calls off search for two missing sailors near Palos Verdes

As dangerous waves and strong winds lashed the Southern California coast, authorities suspended the search for two men whose boat washed up off the coast of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

According to a Coast Guard spokesman, the men went fishing on a small boat that departed from San Pedro on Monday afternoon.

At the time, forecasters issued a small boat warning, warning boaters in Los Angeles County that waves could be as high as 10 feet.

When the men did not return, they were reported missing around 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Passersby found their overturned boat about half an hour later on a rocky stretch of shoreline in Palos Verdes Estates, a Coast Guard spokesman said. However, these people were not on board.

The Coast Guard and several law enforcement agencies deployed rescue boats, drones and helicopters to search the rough waters, but the men had not been found as of Wednesday afternoon.

After not receiving a distress call for more than 30 hours, the Coast Guard announced it was suspending the search.

Within a week of missing boaters, huge waves damaged the historic Santa Cruz Pier and a man died after becoming trapped in debris in high waves in Monterey Bay.

Meteorologists said waves could reach 5 to 10 feet on Christmas Day in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Waves up to 15 feet high are expected to continue throughout the week in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and northern Ventura counties.
