Elon Musk has once again launched an attack on billionaire MacKenzie Scott over her charitable giving.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO shared an X post written by John LeFevre on Monday criticizing Scott. The author and former banker’s posts set off alarm bells about Scott’s donations to nonprofits focused on issues such as racial equality, social justice, immigrant protections and LGBTQ+ rights.
Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has donated more than $19 billion to more than 2,450 nonprofits since 2019 through her Yield Giving organization. Thanks to the rising value of her Amazon stock, her net worth remains in excess of $30 billion.
“So she was just getting started,” Lefebvre wrote.
Musk retweeted the criticism and added the word: “worrying.”
The world’s richest man, who campaigned for Donald Trump and donated more than $270 million to help the former president win re-election, has previously blasted Scott’s support of liberal causes.
“‘Super rich ex-wives who hate their ex-spouse’ should be listed as one of the ‘reasons for the death of Western Civilization,’” Musk said in a now-deleted X post in March.
About two weeks later, Scott announced she was more than doubling the size of her latest tranche of donations to $640 million, spread among 361 organizations.
In May 2022, Musk said Democrats were squeezing out his company because Scott donated to political action committees “posing as charities.” He also said her dislike of Bezos has led to many others “getting caught in the crossfire.”
But Hans Peter Schmitz, distinguished professor of nonprofit leadership at North Carolina State University, told the Business Times in September that Scott sets an example for other philanthropists.
Schmitz said Scott’s gifts are strategic, more direct investments and relies on advisors to ensure she gives to the best nonprofits in an area. However, he noted that she lets recipients decide how to use their gifts and does not tie her wealth to a grantmaking system or foundation.
