Christmas may affect your garbage collection this week. It’s time to throw out the trash and recycling bins
Christmas is just around the corner and many businesses and government offices will be closed to celebrate the holiday. This may affect your garbage and recycling collection.
Below is information about the garbage collection schedule during the upcoming holiday season.
When will my trash be collected during Christmas week in Indianapolis?
Rubbish and recycling will not be collected over the Christmas period.
According to Indy.gov, trash, heavy trash and recycling collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week after Christmas.
Christmas Day is Wednesday, December 25th, so for residents who normally receive their rubbish or recycling on a Wednesday, they will receive their rubbish the following Thursday.
The remaining days of the week will follow suit. This means Thursday’s rubbish will be collected on Friday and Friday’s rubbish will be collected on Saturday. This is to get everything caught up so that next week’s schedule can get back to normal. This is called a slide schedule.

What days are considered holidays that will affect my garbage collection?
The city observes the following holidays resulting in schedule changes:
-
Martin Luther King Day
It’s important to note that if any of these holidays fall on a weekend, it will not affect your garbage collection schedule.
How do I know if my garbage collection has been delayed?
Indy Public Works will remind and inform residents on social media and newsletters about trash collection updates.
Will my trash collection be affected by winter weather?
Yes; slide schedules may also be implemented when there is severe weather affecting the roads (especially snow).
If it snows on the day of trash collection, the city asks residents to place carts and recycling bins on the curb in front of large snowbanks and, if possible, clear 4 feet of space on either side to allow room for collection trucks.
It is recommended to store your carts and recycling bins away from ice and to shovel a path from the storage area to your home and street, and to regularly remove snow and ice from your trash and recycling carts.
Will my garbage collection be affected by New Year’s Day?
Yes; your garbage collection will be affected on New Year’s Day. Since Christmas Day falls exactly one week after Christmas, the slideshow schedule will look exactly like the one detailed above.
What should I do if I miss a garbage collection?
If you forget to take out the trash and miss a garbage collection, there are two things you can do.
If your trash can has room, you can save it until next week, but if not, you can take your household and heavy-duty trash to the Marion County Citizens Transfer Station for a small fee.
The fee is $2 per vehicle and $5 per SUV or pickup truck. The only form of payment accepted is cash, and you can take a maximum of two rides per day.
No moving trucks, twin axles, trailers, pallets, stake trucks and trucks over 3/4 ton are allowed.
The Marion County Citizens Transfer Station is located at 2324 S. Belmont Ave. and is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
