Yankees sign one-time MVP Paul Goldschmidt as they continue transformation after losing Juan Soto: Report

The New York Yankees keep making moves.

The Yankees have signed first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year deal, according to YES Network’s Jack Curry.

Goldschmidt, 37, has spent the past six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and won the NL MVP in 2022.

Last season was a poor year by Goldschmidt’s standards, as he hit 22 home runs and hit just .245.

However, in the final two months of the season, Goldschmidt’s batting average improved, batting .273 while also having a higher on-base percentage.

Goldschmidt is a career .289 hitter with 362 home runs and 1,187 RBIs in his 14-year career.

First base was an ineffective position for the Yankees offense last year, with both rookie Ben Rice and veteran Anthony Rizzo underperforming.

The 2024 Yankees first basemen’s OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) combined is just 0.619, the lowest in Major League Baseball.

Although Juan Soto was lost to the New York Mets, the seven-time All-Star will move into the middle of the Yankees lineup, deepening the Yankees’ already strong lineup.

Since losing Soto, the Yankees have turned to their “Plan B.” The team signed starting pitcher Max Fried, acquired closer Devin Williams, acquired outfielder Cody Bellinger and signed Goldschmidt.

Goldschmidt isn’t the Yankees’ first MVP winner this offseason, Bellinger won the 2019 National League MVP with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Yankees have four MVP winners on their roster, along with Goldschmidt, Bellinger, Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge.

Stanton won the National League MVP with the Miami Marlins in 2017, and Judge won the American League MVP two consecutive years in 2022 and 2024.
