The Oscar winner confirmed his exit from the Paramount Network drama in June 2024, following months of speculation over whether he would appear in the final episodes of season five.

Rumors about Costner’s departure began in early 2023 after Season 5A ended. Costner said the day after the Season 5B premiere that he had no idea the first episode would finally premiere without him. “I’ll be honest. I didn’t know it actually aired last night,” he said in an interview with SiriusXM on November 11, 2024 Michael Smerconish Project. “It was a swear-to-God moment. I was seeing ads with my face everywhere and I was thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’m not that person in that ad.’ But I didn’t realize what happened yesterday.
He noted that he hadn’t seen the episode but had heard about what happened, quipping, “I heard it was a suicide, so that doesn’t make me want to rush out and watch it.”
