2024 Toronto Marris vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins

1) Toronto Gellis (+7)

On one hand, the Marlies trailed the visiting Bakersfield Condors 5-1 in the opening 22 minutes last Saturday. On the other hand, they then defeated the Condors 6-5 in overtime with five unanswered goals. Denis Hilderby is expected to see some time with the Toronto Maple Leafs due to an injury to Anthony Stolarz, but the Marlies are being handled by Artur Akhtiamov and Matt Murray in his absence Gatekeeping duties.

2) Calgary Wrangler (+1)

Two consecutive nights of losses at Coachella Valley have slowed the team’s momentum, but the Wranglers will be back at home soon. After Wednesday’s stop in Ontario, their next six games will be in Calgary, where they have won 11 of 14 home games this season. A major test will be how the Wranglers perform without standout netminder Devin Cooley, who was recalled to the Calgary Flames.

3) Hershey Bear(+1)

After reaching back-to-back Calder Cup finals, the Bears had played a league-high 28 games and just needed a break. They now have a full week between games before a big test at home against Toronto on Saturday night.

4) Grand Rapids Griffins (-3)

Grand Rapids has slowed down a bit since a 12-3-1-0 offense put them in contention for first place in the AHL. Goaltender Sebastian Cosa returns to the team after being recalled by the Detroit Red Wings. Wednesday’s game at Texas ends a six-game road streak.

5) Cleveland Monsters (-3)

After eight home games, the Monsters are off to a 2-0-1-1 start. Now they’ll have back-to-back home games against struggling Utica. The Monsters will visit Grand Rapids five times over three weeks starting Dec. 28. Now is the time to save your points.

6) San Jose Barracuda (+1)

As dominant as top prospect Jaroslav Askarov has been, goaltending partner Georgiy Romanov has proven he can shine as well. He finished the weekend against Ontario with a 42-save performance and helped the Barracudas lose 5-4 in a shootout. Aside from a three-game loss in early November, the Barracudas have been pretty solid this season.

7) Coachella Valley Firebirds (+2)

The Firebirds swept Calgary in two games at home last weekend, snapping a 1-3-1-2 slide. These wins come at a good time as this week’s games will bring tough challenges, starting with San Jose’s road trip to the Ontario Reign and then a home series against the Ontario Reign. Ales Stezka and Nikke Kokko are both capable in front of the net. Such a tandem would be a change for the Firebirds after Joey Daccord and Chris Driedger proved to be the top starters over the past two seasons.

8) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (-2)

The Penguins have been hard to figure out at times. In four games, they have scored six goals, zero goals, six goals and zero goals respectively. They then faced off against Springfield on Saturday, and finally managed to win 5-4 in overtime. On their defense, however, injuries and recalls have been their story for much of the first two months of the season. With a solid roster, this could be a very dangerous club.

9) Laval Rockets (-4)

The Rockets have been in decline for much of the past month since winning 12 of their first 14 games, with a record of 4-6-1-1. They got back on track with a 6-2 win over Bridgeport on the road last Sunday afternoon. Laval’s roster is relatively unscathed as parent team the Montreal Canadiens are going through their own challenges.

10) Charlotte Checkers (+3)

Head coach Jody Kinnear’s Checkers need some Thanksgiving time at home to regroup. They have won six of their last eight games, including back-to-back wins at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Hershey last weekend. With 10 of their next 14 games at home, they can really cement themselves in the upper echelons of the Atlantic Division.

11) King’s Landing, Ontario (+4)

12) Providence Bruins (+12)

13) Belleville Senators (-1)

14) Springfield Thunderbirds (+3)

15) Milwaukee Admiral(-5)

16) Rochester Americans (+5)

17) Colorado Eagles (-6)

18) Abbotsford Canucks (+2)

19) Tucson Roadrunners (+4)

20) Chicago Wolves (+5)

21) Hartford Wolfpack (-3)

22) Texas Stars(-8)

23) Lehigh Valley Phantom (-7)

24) Syracuse Crunch (-5)

25) Rockford IceHogs (+2)

26) Bakersfield Condors (-4)

27) San Diego Gulls (+4)

28) Iowa Wild(-2)

29) Comet Utica(-1)

30) Manitoba Moose(–)

31) Bridgeport Islanders(-2)

32) Henderson Silver Knights(–)
