The 19-year-old Taunton man was transported to the landing zone by the Dayton Fire Department and flown by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle, a Dayton woman, was also transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Berkeley Fire Rescue. Dayton police did not indicate the severity of her injuries.

Dayton police said that before the accident, at approximately 6:18 p.m., a Dayton police officer witnessed a gray Mercedes sedan turning right from Somerset Avenue onto Old Somerset Avenue and driving at a high rate of speed.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed the Mercedes continued to accelerate west on Tremont Street. In the area of ​​465 Tremont St., the car veered off the road, hit a utility pole and then a tree before rolling and coming to an upright stop.
