What was almost inevitable at the Tour Championship on September 1 officially became a reality on Tuesday: The PGA Tour announced that world No. 1 Scotty Scheffler has been named the PGA Tour’s 2024 Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Winner of the Players Award.
Scheffler won an incredible seven official PGA Tour events in 2024, including a second Masters title in April and a second straight Players Championship in March.
Those seven wins don’t include the 28-year-old Texan’s two other wins this year: Olympic gold in Paris and last week’s Hero World Challenge.
Xander Schauffele at least made things interesting this summer, winning two majors at the PGA Championship and Open Championship. With these huge wins, some are wondering if Schauffele should receive Player of the Year honors if he goes on to win the FedEx Cup. But Scheffler himself eliminated that possibility by winning the Tour Championship and FedExCup and collecting a $25 million bonus.
Including bonuses, Scheffler earned more than $63 million on the court during his most recent run for Player of the Year.
This is the third consecutive PGA Tour Player of the Year for Scheffler, becoming the only player since Tiger Woods to win the Jack Nicklaus Award three consecutive years. Woods has accomplished this feat twice, winning five consecutive times from 1999-2003 and three consecutive times from 2005-2007. Woods has won a total of 11 Jack Nicklaus Awards. Rory McIlroy was the only player to score a three-pointer.
The Jack Nicklaus Award is voted on by players who compete in at least 15 PGA Tour events this season. Scheffler won with 91 percent of the vote, according to the PGA Tour, with Scheffler and McIlroy also receiving votes.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan congratulated Scheffler in a press release announcing the win, writing, “On behalf of the PGA Tour, congratulations to Scottie Scheffler on a truly historic season. Coming off his first FedEx Cup victory and winning his third consecutive Jack Nicklaus Award as PGA Tour Player of the Year today, Scottie has spent the entire season accepting the world’s best awards on the biggest stage. A challenge for good players, being named PGA Tour Player of the Year is the ultimate sign of the respect he has for his peers.
Scheffler’s seven Tour wins during his successful Player of the Year campaign were the most by any player in a season since Woods in 2007, and Scheffler has been official for 82 consecutive weeks. Top of the world golf rankings. He also won the 2024 Byron Nelson Award for having the lowest points per game for the second consecutive season, averaging 68.65 for the year.
