UnitedHealthcare CEO Luigi Mangione charged with murder in New York
New York City prosecutors charged UnitedHealthcare executive killer Luigi Mangione with murder late Monday night, according to online court records.
The 26-year-old man was also charged Unlawful possession of weapons (loaded firearms)On December 4, Brian Thompson was shot and killed, including possession of a forged musical instrument and illegal possession of a weapon (a firearm silencer).
Thompson, 50, was shot from behind on the sidewalk outside the New York Hilton hotel ahead of a shareholder meeting. He was appointed CEO of the company in April 2021.
Mangione was arrested Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a five-day nationwide manhunt for Thompson’s killer.

Altoona rookie police officer Tyler Frye detained Mangione after an employee and a customer at a McDonald’s in town thought he looked like the suspect on a wanted poster and reported him to authorities police.
When police approached Mangione, who was wearing a mask and beanie while working on a laptop in the back of the restaurant and asked him to remove his face covering, they recognized him as a suspect wanted in Thompson’s murder. .
During that encounter, he allegedly handed over a fake ID, gave a false name and “became quiet and started shaking” when asked if he had been to New York recently.
He also allegedly possessed articles critical of the health care industry and a ghost gun similar to the gun believed to have been used to kill Thompson.
Altoona police initially detained Mangione on charges unrelated to Thompson’s murder, including possession of an unlicensed firearm, providing false identification to police and forging documents.

Mangioni graduated at the top of his class from the elite Gilman School in Baltimore and even gave the commencement address at the 2016 commencement, according to a video of the ceremony.
“He seemed like a smart kid who was always doing the right thing,” a former classmate who was shocked by the arrest told Fox News Digital on Monday. “Not crazy.”
He subsequently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering and was a member of the Eta Kappa Nu electrical and computer engineering honor society.

Mangione is expected to be extradited to New York as soon as Tuesday.
