NYPD releases two new photos of man hunting for United Healthcare executive’s death
The New York Police Department released two new photos Saturday showing a man wanted in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson.
The photos are the latest in a series of photos taken by the New York Police Department of the same man wanted in Wednesday’s murder.
In one of the photos, the person can be seen through the partition of what appears to be a New York City taxi, wearing a blue medical mask and a black hoodie.
Another photo, taken from inside the car, shows a man outside the window walking along the vehicle, wearing the same blue mask and dark down jacket with a hat covering his head.
Investigators have been able to trace some of his movements in the taxi, the NYPD said.
As the investigation into Thompson’s killing and the manhunt for the shooter continued into Saturday, three sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News that no one involved has yet been identified.
The FBI, Crime Stoppers and NYPD are offering a combined $60,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooter.
Officials said Thompson was shot to death Wednesday morning outside the New York Hilton City Center hotel on his way to a UnitedHealth Group investor meeting.
Thompson was shot at least once in the back and once in the right calf. He traveled without security.
“Based on the evidence we have so far, the victims were indeed specifically targeted,” NYPD Detective Joseph Kenney said earlier this week. “But at this point, we don’t know why.”
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tish said on Wednesday that this was a “premeditated, planned and targeted attack.”
Police said shell casings found at the scene had the words “deny,” “delay” and “discard” written on them.
Police also found a gray backpack in Central Park that the suspect was said to be carrying at the time of the killing. Officials are investigating whether it is the same bag, two senior law enforcement officials told NBC News.
A cellphone was found near the scene and investigators are trying to use it to learn more about the man’s contacts and whereabouts, two sources familiar with the investigation said.
Four sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News on Saturday that no gun was found in the backpack. Three sources said the bag contained a jacket, but it was unclear whether it was the jacket the shooter was wearing at the time of the shooting.
Authorities believe a man wanted in connection with the murder may have left the state.
Kenney told reporters that the video shows the man riding a bicycle in Central Park and then taking a taxi to a Port Authority bus station near the George Washington Bridge.
Investigators are seeking more video to determine whether he boarded a bus from there and, if so, which one.
Police believe he may have traveled from Atlanta to New York City on a Greyhound bus last month, three senior law enforcement officials familiar with the case told NBC News. They said the bus made several stops along the way and arrived in New York on November 24.
New York officials are investigating whether they can find the names used on the Nov. 24 trip, and Atlanta police and Greyhound Bus Company are both assisting in the investigation.
The man stayed at a hotel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side while in New York, the NYPD said in a news release on Friday. Authorities are investigating whether he paid cash and used a fake ID to rent a room there.
The hotel roommate said he kept his mask on, even while eating, and only pulled it down to take a bite, the NYPD said.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News on Wednesday that her husband had been receiving threats, but she did not know the nature of the threats.
“There are some threats,” she said. “Basically, I don’t know, lack of coverage? I don’t know the details. All I know is that he said someone had been threatening him.
