Former prime minister to oversee state institutions until handover

(Reuters) – Syria’s state institutions will be overseen by former Prime Minister Mohammad Jalali until the handover, rebel leader Abu Mohammad Golani said on Sunday, signaling an end to Bashar al-Assad’s plans Efforts to ensure an orderly transition after the German regime came to power.

Golani’s statement, signed by his real name, Ahmed Shallah, banned Damascus’s military from approaching public institutions and banned shooting in the air.

Jalali, who was appointed prime minister by Assad in September, said in an interview with Al-Arabiya television that he had contacted Salat to discuss managing the current transition period and said Syria should hold free elections.

Jalali said he remained at home and was ready to support the continuity of governance.

Syrian Telecommunications Minister Erad al-Khatib said in an interview with Al-Arabiya television that representatives of Sharaa’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, responsible for telecommunications services, had contacted him. Khatib said they agreed that telecommunications and internet would continue to operate.
